These last few years i've got really keen on Buddhism. I think in the West, we have a natural inclination towards Eastern outlook, for its difference to our historical thought. For its general relaxed demeanour to religion.. there are many reasons. Buddhism in particular garners a weight of that leaning.
I got into meditation properly right after uni when I moved to Mevagissey for a bit (to live with Miguel). Because it was so quiet there and peaceful in the quiet harbour, mornings were ripe for being still and quiet.
I got into it for a few reasons; one being that natural inclination for sure, also that I am a keen reader, and focus & concentration are important for reading; skills practicing meditation would surely enhance. I don't mean to sound so robotic about it, as I don't feel that way.
I think meditation is becoming more important to the West too as an antidote to our busy lives. Everything is on, always, phones in ears always, sideways thoughts on hectic highstreets.. we are naturally lusting for that 'minute' of silence, the chance to get our minds back to 'now'. It's all about 'Being here now'.
I also got into it as I knew how it'd help my animation practice. Here's a few ideas on why its conductive to animation;
In meditation, especially the practice of mindfulness, we look over our bodies, bit by bit, feeling in every inch of the body. Feeling the pull of individual acute aches & being aware of your anatomy.
I find this technique very close to how I feel in life drawing. In life drawing you're not only looking at some other body, but trying to relate that feeling in your own body - that weight, the fall of things, the pull on intricate & hidden muscles that cause tension on the surface.. If you can draw focus to your own body, and help imitate the flow and feel of what you're looking at, you can understand it on a deeper level, that serves to improve the understanding in your own drawing. If you can feel it you can see it. Or notice it, rather.
Simillarily, in mindfulness we practice watching our breath. This is a fundamental technique, in that the breath serves as an anchor we can always return to, like a mantra. The breath is constant, so-necessary, yet we are often not concious of it, we just do it. Also, by controlling our breath, we can control our mood - slow deep breath's and all that..
So, in watching the breath, we as animators can begin to articulate all those subtle movements in the chest that we never usually notice. We can follow the breath down into the belly, fill your lungs from bottom-up, and roll it back out like a wave, feel it tickle out our noses calmly. Articulating like this is to recall that intricate eye we strive to acquire in animation. To be able to look in such detail is key.
Cultivating that pointed, focused, contcentration in meditation helps us in animation too. Animation is a long and sometimes laborious task that takes dedication and patience. It is good to have us held there content. This is a great antithesis to the inevitable procrastination that waves over you. Like in the Zen saying, 'Dont just do something, sit there!'. Disciplined patience.
I find too in meditation I am often beginning to imagine some obscure mental parable, in line with the practice. often revolving around the breath. Here's a couple, just for example of what I mean, because of course these are steeped in subjectivity:
- I often visualize my breath like a wave rolling on the shore, from the deep of my lungs, rolling its way up my chest, out of my mouth.
- I will often have two images in mind too - or one that contorts to the sway of my breath. E.g to meditate on a face that droops and relaxes as my body does with the breath, and pulls tight as I breathe in anew.
- Also I like to picture a flower, growing. It begins in the dirt, the mess of wantaway life, and, rising through, pulling straight in the stem, unveils its petals in buddha-wisdom. The lotus flower that grows wherever. 'This is the moment of embarking, all auspicious signs are in place'. I remember that in meditation, and it helps garner in me this blossoming flower metaphor.
There is so much more, the idea of satori too - cultivating a quiet mind, that lights up with that great spark of idea. We can't control, or number, the amount of 'moments' we will have like this, visionary moments, the lightbulb flicking on (eurika!) (called satori's in the east, but usually reserved for monastic thought), but we can help by putting ourselves in fertile ground, and staying well watered.

I'll leave it there. Let me know if you see it likewise, or have anything to add.

These are my tips for overcoming computer sickness.. I thought my Mum was just tryin' to scare me when she said about square eyes.. but she forgot to mention losing the ability to cohesively speak in words, the numb bum & the dizzyness.
Computer sickness is an infliction... I find myself increasingly doing stranger and stranger things.. at 2am.. marching round the kitchen chanting the grand Old Duke of York at a faster and faster speeds...
Anywho here's a comp of animation from saturday-thursday. Most aren't quite finished but you get the jist.

Also, this is quite interesting to listen to. Glen Keane talking about animations capabilities. It's from 4 years before he left Disney, so with this in mind, will be interesting to see what he does now.

Animation from last week
For the dissertation hand in week, myself n Mig both agreed to prioritise our diss's. The following week, I had a break 'n went back home. This last week, have got back on it. Check out the vid above to see what i've been up to.
Luke from the second year has also done a nice bit of animation of the skull exploding for us which you'll be able to see in the latest edit (which i'll upload later this week). Sophie too is helping out with the colouring which is great, am really looking forward to seeing some more completed scenes.
More soon, enjoy.

PS, while i've been working i've been watching lots of stuff. Netflix is a great little work companion. Despite the rumblings about it being 'best to animate in silence', I like to have something going on next to me when i'm doing some of the more lobotomous tasks.
I watched a good docu about Kurt Cobain yesterday, 'About a Son'. It gives a humbling view of him and his roots, worth checking out. I think overall stripping away the whole rockstar image, Kurt Cobain was just essentially a nice-humble friendly human being, much like all of us, and it's nice to listen to him talk about mundane things for a while.
This Doors documentary is pretty cool. Anything about the Doors is worth listening to though really isnt it. Great album.
Watched a few Hitchcock flicks too. I really like watching old films because they're alot more naive in their pursuit, and you get the sense that the studios weren't so heavy on them to do the 'same old same old' (perhaps because there was no same old same old). They try things out alot more (especially Hitchcock), sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. But eitherway its a pursuit of an interesting idea that is so fresh, even today.
This is interesting too.
Regardless of your stance on conspiracy theories (which I am open-ears too, although I don't like the hysteria/elitism that usually surrounds them), he brings forward some interesting ideas. Whether it's true or not (that there's some concious, sinister intent to recruit people to join the army), it's just sad enough as it is.. It's sad that killing people would be so naively painted in such a way.. To quote Belle & Sebastian:
If you’re going off to war then I wish you wellBut don’t be soreIf I cheer the other teamKilling people’s not my sceneI prefer to give the inhabitants a sayBefore you blow their town awayI like to watch them playI like to marvel at the random beauty of a simple village girlWhy should she be the one who’s killed?
Ta to Mig for that one. He's been getting me onto all these videos. David Icke too. I think my postmen may be a lizard person but i'm not quite sure, he seems a little too curious of my tin-foil hat, I may have to follow him. Stay tuned.

walk animation
Here's my walk loop:
Am happy with it. Very sketchy but does the job me thinks.
In other news: I have been working on an arcade machine for the last week. It's a paid job to make the intro/waiting screen animation that plays before people have put there money in. It's actually become quite good fun, as im using it to coincide with teaching myself a few more tricks in After Effects. Will post up when project is complete.
Also, built a website last month for a new nutrition website starting up. All this paid work is quite satisfying! Esprit Nutrition

A Scanner Darkly
Just watched this film again. I first watched it when it came out in 2006 and have seen it a few times since and I would tell you all to go and watch it. Firstly because you're all animation students, and this film is a very good experimental film to watch, it uses a keen rotoscoping style throughout (and leaves you thinking why bother no doubt), and secondly because it's a very good film regardless. The plot is tough to grasp at first, it revolves around a group of drug fiends and a police investigator, watching over them in a big brother patrolled state. But there is more to it than that, more than the actual plot of the film - the themes within are what is interesting narratively. It talks about the state we live in, big brother, and where we are headed (or have arrived.. - the book was written in the 70's), loss-of-many things, drug addiction and the casualties along the way. Ironically this film is one of them that 'you should watch on drugs'... but really watching it, you realise it is in retaliation to that stereotype.
Anywho a very good film, and two very worthwhile reasons to watch. It's in the library at uni.
Also, I realised watching it for the third time, this guy is also the cool stoner kid out of 'Dazed and Confused'.. wahey!
What does a scanner see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Does it see into me? Into us? Clearly or darkly?
Fly project
UPDATE:
Today have made a few steps towards the finished thing. We've started to polish up specific shots for the ending.
Chris has made some cool images of world sites being destroyed. Now, in the brief, Denzil was specific that we should NOT include notable landmarks from around the world, however, because we are including a multitude of them, this in essence makes it non-specific to location. I have okay'd this with Denzil too.
Heres some of Chris' images:

Thomas has been mashing out pictures of flies still. He gave me some images I could use for the fly taking off for the final shot of the intro (when the fly is on the American flag). I scanned them all in and traced over them in Flash, coloured them, then exported the file to After Effects to modify. I am not the best at After Effects, but will have a go at messing with it. If I cant get it right i'll hand it over to Chris or Brian to have a tinker. You can see what i've done here:
Also I animated a guy running yesterday, which Brian has already got into After Effects. THIS is my guy running, and THIS is Brian's edit.

So, have a gander, see what you think. All is progressing nicely I feel, and although the deadline is coming up quick, we WILL be done me reckonss, Done and DUSTED.
Ident project
Finished my ident project. I had a bit of a set back in that me computer died and I changed my idea accordingly. I was gunna do it all in flash and try and do a Tex Avery style thing, but dont think i had the time to get it done just in the studio (late nights are the best nights for animating).
So instead I changed my idea to a graffiti style thing done in 'mixed media'. I did a bit of 2D animation, a bit of pixelation, and combined it in After Effects with some... after effects added in.
Am happy with the end result, I did the audio quite easily, it's one track of me saying 'Reeedd roooom..', one track of music from the free sound project, & another FSP file of radio static. I think the audio goes well with it so am happey.
I like it too because it plays on the 'redrum' thing from the shining. The text 'red room' is playing in reverse... simillar to how in the film, 'Red Rum' is seen in reverse in the mirror. Also it's in blood red, and also the pronounciation is quite similar! So all in all an ode to the shining, just what Virgin media where after i'm sure.
You can watch it here although Youtube has squashed it horizontally.

We break up today which is cool. I am lookin forward to falling back into the bubble of homelife... not having to make food, not having to work.. t'is all gooood. I will keep up the habit of drawing alot over easter, I do that anywho without pushing myself.
So yeah, peace out n see ya when I get back. Ta-ra.

Flash and storyboard completed
Wahey I have finally finished the flash & the story board projects. I came in at 10 this morning thinking it'd take an hour or two to touch up the Flash & scan in the story board.. but no, ended up taking me 8 hours... Gaawwwd. Feels good to be finished except me heads aching pretty severely..!
Anywho here is the flash

These were both projects of things I really enjoy. I would like to be a story board artist maybe when i'm done. I really like films too so maybe that is ma way into the film industry.. Flash too is good. I have been doing it for years but have not attempted a lip sync for a while. It was good fun adding character to the voice. But I hope I neveer meet that girl.. built up a hatred for her while animating.
Anywho enjoi.

Flash project - penultimate
Yo. Have almost finished the flash project now. I really focused on the girls face and getting body language/expression across through it. At the animated Exeter thing the other day, Richard Haynes was talking about how on Shaun the Sheep, Aardman are very empirical about the eyes. The eyes are the point of focus for human beings to understand. Once they are in place and working theres a link to the audience that you can communicate through n the whole thing is a lot more entrapping.
Im liking the way this is coming along. I have never really given lip syncing a good go and so it's nice to finish something with that technique.
Im having second thoughts about having her be in a war zone. Although I like the idea, I think it would be more distracting, im thinking of maybe having her in a gallery instead, hanging a bunch of pretentious pictures in the background to get across the girls ideal. Although I do feel this would be a bit of a cop out really, it would certainly be a lot more simple. But I do think it would make more sense. Iiii dunno. Will decide when I get to that bit.
Wont bother updating anymore now until it's finished.

Flash project
I got a lil update on the flash project. I have been working on this since last night. The way I see it im through the longest part, the lip sync - and am now over half way on the whole thing.
It's static right now, but all the facial elements will be contained in a graphic then moved about and be animated.
The way i'm thinking of doing the body is doing several key poses to go with the action, and then using them as individual stances that can then be modified. I'm not sure whether to use tweening, i've used it for the chin, but I'm not liking it all that much. The chin gets better 15+ seconds in - it becomes less erratic, that's because I was trying something out, and I guess it took me a good few frames to get the method down. Anywho i'll go back n correct the beginning bit of the chin later.
Enjoy. I'm wanting to finish this quite quick so hopefully by the weekend I will of.
UPDATE - Urrgh god, god a virus on my computer. I swear this is the first time I have had a virus in ages.. I WERENT DOIN' NUFFIN OFFICER! My own fault for trying to install Adobe Master collection I guess..
It's called the 'Vista guardian' virus - if anyones had it before n knows how to get rid of it please help because i'm a bit worried me comp is gunna die. I believe I have everything copied to my hard drive anywho, but i've never had to restart a comp from scratch and aint planning on it.

New sprites
Heelo. I bin working on some new game sprites recently for a game called Ninja Squirrel. I came up with it a while ago with someone else, and now I just felt like picking up the batton once more. Who knows if it'll get finished, but it's good practice nonetheless.
I'm still doing it very much in my own way, there wasn't a whole load of theorizing behind the animation when I began this - but now little bits are seeping in to my working method. For example the sketches beforehand of the characters next pose have become a lot more dynamic and extreme. The new ones are the punch & the throw ones. Before hand my drawings would very much stay more 'static' and not differ the pose to much but they are starting to moreso now.
another interesting thing, is that for a long time i've found it hard to do flash, as when I load it up, lay down the first brush stroke, my mind just says 'Nah..' and I close it. It's to much of a ordeal to start over I guess and because i've got so much unfinished things, i'm geared towards not finishing, so why bother?
So now what i've started doing, is sticking a record on my record player, and listening it all the way through till it needs turning over (every 20 minutes or so). I keep myself working until the side needs changing, then if I want a five minute break, I can. Working like this is seeming to keep me motivated so THANK GOD I may actually finish some things.

The thing I mentioned before
Here we go all done. My pal Nick was here earlier and we recorded the guitars for this, now it's done.
The idea behind it is how Che Guevara has now become just an icon.. rather than the iconic bloke i'm sure he was. I say 'am sure', because I myself am one of the ones who bought this work on... I have had his poster on my wall since I was about 13, but have not yet looked into him. So here this is to all the people like myself who need to scratch beneath the painted surface and find out just who this guy was, not just a pretty face.
I don't know what kind of animation you'd class this as... Stop motion? I did it by stenciling out the image and then painting it on my shower wall in acryllic paint. It's the first time i've used acryllic paint outside the secondary school art room (where it was used more for flickin on peoples clothes rather than painting with...) so I didn't know how well it would work, if it would run down the wall etc... well, it didnt run, but it did come off easily, which was perfect for the project because I could spray on a little water to dampen it, scratch a little paint off, then add some below. It didn't take all that long really, about 3 hours to finish the animation, about 20 minutes to put the stencil on in the first place? Cutting it out was the longest part.

Bouncing cube
Heelo. Messed with Maya today and got a little more familiar with it. Some day soon im gunna sit down n get all tangled up in Maya and hopefully come out a better 3d animator for it, probably slightly more nerdy too. Bloody maths!
So yeeeaah that's that.
In other news, watched this pretty decent documentary last night about Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg & William Burroghs. It documents how the beat generation began & helped somewhat revolve into the hippy movement. It's on the uni library stream service if you wanna check it out, 'The Source' it's called. Johnny Depp, Dennis Hopper & John Turtorro star.
This isn't a clip from it but it's pretty damn cool.
Here are some drawings too:

A little research here and there
Hellooo again. Tonight i've been filling me brain with all tiddly bits of research and more importantly and correctly, inspiration. I've been reading through Anne's weekly readings and checking out some of the animations mentioned.
It's a shame about the connotations to black culture, and the representation of black people being these one-dimensional jolly dancers - But I really enjoy the style of alot of the typical 'black face' cartoons.. that old animated, fun, jazzy style. I've been checking some out such as..
"SUNBEAM"
"COAL BLACK AND DE SEBBEN DWARFS'"
I really liked Sunbeam because I have an inkling for animations set to music. It's very well done. I liked the immediacy of the storytelling moreso in Coal Black.
And finally here's something a little different, I got linked to this earlier, a little bit of experimental animation. Makes you marvel at the time the guy must have spent putting it together, but in reality, I doubt it was much longer than many other more traditional animations of the same length out there.
That's all, folks.

Old blog reborn
Wow that's a surprise, I never remembered I ever created a blog on this here blogger but there ya go I guess I did, and it was booming back in the day clearly, 1 post - 0 replies, Whoar!
So here it is reborn, and will contain all animation work, drawings, films, tiddly-bits of inspiration and whatever else is to grace it during my time at university.
To start off here's the first bit-of animation i've created since being here in Falmouth. I call it "A Smile not to disimillar to Dwight Yorke's", CLICK HERE to watch.

I've started using watercolours lately and am really liking them, usually i'd do a drawing, with my biro or nib-end, chewed up HB pencil; and once it's done, its nice but there's no where else to go. Watercolours add to that as I can get in there and simply make it alot better, It's good for shading and colour depth. So this is my fourth watercolour i've done, it's of my sister.

That's all for now, expect more posts soon. Ta-ra!
